Student data privacy, in plain language.
What we keep when a child reads with Ready, Set, Reading!, who can see it, and how to delete it. Written for parents and for schools.
- Voices are not saved.
- Each spoken answer is turned into text so it can be scored. The audio itself is not kept.
- No ads, no selling.
- Student data is never sold and never used for advertising.
- An adult is in charge.
- Every student account is added by the parent or teacher who holds the license, and they can see its progress.
What we store about a student
- Email address
- The license holder adds it to invite the student, and it is how the student signs in. It doesn't have to be the child's own address. It can be one a parent or the school manages.
- Name (optional)
- Only stored if someone adds one to the reader's profile.
- Lesson progress
- For each exercise: scores, the number of attempts, when it was attempted and passed, and the text of the most recent attempt. This lets the child pick up where they stopped and shows the adult how they are doing.
- Reward points
- Points earned from reading and the items chosen in the Reading Rewards Shop.
We don't ask for a student's date of birth, home address, phone number, or photo.
What happens to a child's voice
The microphone records only after the child presses the purple button to answer. When they finish, the clip is sent to a speech-to-text service, which sends back the words it heard. We compare those words with the expected sound, word, or sentence to score the attempt.
We don't save the audio. The only thing kept is the text of the most recent attempt at each exercise, next to its score, so the adult can see what was said.
Who can see a student's data
Two accounts can see a student's progress: the student's own, and the parent or teacher who holds the license. Other families and other teachers can't. The database enforces this with an access rule on every table that holds student data, so it doesn't depend on the app remembering to check.
We use student data only to run the lessons and to report progress back to the license holder.
Companies that help run the app
| Provider | What it does | Student data it handles |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database and sign-in | The student data listed above. Supabase encrypts it at rest (AES-256) and in transit (TLS). |
| OpenAI | Speech-to-text for scoring | The audio of each attempt. Its documentation states that audio sent for transcription is not used to train its models and is not retained. |
| Vercel | Website hosting and page-view counts | Anonymous page views, counted without cookies. |
| Stripe | License payments | None. Only the paying adult’s payment details. |
Removing a student and deleting data
Removing a student from the license dashboard ends their access right away. To delete the student's account and all of their progress, email support@readysetreading.com and we will delete it.
Trying Lesson 1 without an account saves nothing about the child on our servers. Their progress stays in your browser. Answers are still scored the same way, and the audio is not kept.
For parents
With a Parent Plan, you add each child's account yourself and can see their progress from your dashboard. You can ask us at any time to show you, correct, or delete what we hold about your child.
For schools
With a Teacher Plan, the teacher or school decides which students are added and is responsible for any consent their school or district requires. Students can be invited with school-issued email addresses.
We act as a service provider to the school: student data is used only to run the curriculum and report progress to the license holder. If your district has a data privacy agreement or a vendor questionnaire, send it to support@readysetreading.com.
